The call

Water on the floor during a wash, with the door properly closed. On a front-loader that complaint points at one part before any other, and the owner had already worked out which. What they had not worked out was why a seal that age should be failing.

What we found

The door gasket was the leak, and it had not simply worn out. It was deformed — distorted and no longer holding its shape where it has to lie flat against the glass. Rubber in that state cannot be adjusted back into sealing. It either holds its form or it does not.

Something aggressive had been used on it. The mould it was aimed at was still there, sitting in the fold where we pulled the gasket back. That is the part worth repeating: the chemical lost its argument with the mould and won the one with the rubber.

The door carried the same evidence. The finish on the outer panel had been eaten through and was lifting away in sheets — it came off under light pressure, with nothing sound underneath it to hold on to. That damage is cosmetic and it is permanent; the door was not replaced. But it shows plainly what had been on the machine and how strong it was.

The fix

Fitted a new door gasket, seated on both rings the way it should be, then ran the machine with water in the drum and watched the line where it had been leaking. Dry.

The advice that goes with this one matters more than the part. Mould on a front-loader gasket is not a stain to be attacked with something strong — it is a maintenance problem, and the rubber loses that fight every time. Wipe the fold dry after a wash, leave the door open between loads so it can air, and run the machine's own tub-clean cycle at the interval the manual gives.

A gasket that stays wet grows mould. A gasket stripped with harsh chemicals stops sealing, and then it leaks on the floor. The second problem costs more than the first.
