Kenmore French-door refrigerator: fresh food warm, freezer still cold
One compartment warm and the other cold is the most useful thing a refrigerator can tell you — it rules out the expensive faults before anything is opened.

The call
The customer called about the fresh food side not cooling. The freezer was fine — ice cream still firm, ice maker still filling. Only the top half of the refrigerator had gone warm.
People usually assume that means the refrigerator is half broken and expensive to fix. It usually means the opposite.
What we found
One side cold and the other warm is the most useful complaint a refrigerator can give you, because it rules out the costly faults before you open anything. A failing compressor or a leaking sealed system starves both compartments. When the freezer is still holding, the cooling itself is working — the cold simply is not getting upstairs.
That leaves three candidates, and they are easy to confuse with each other: the evaporator fan that moves the air, the damper that meters how much of it reaches the fresh food side, and the defrost system, which can ice the coil over until no air can pass through it at all. So we take the rear panel out of the freezer and look instead of guessing. An iced-up coil points at defrost. A clear coil with a dead fan points at the fan. A clear coil with a running fan sends us to the damper.
Here the coil was clean and evenly frosted, and the fan was dead. That is the shortest version of this repair and the cheapest one for the customer.
It is also one of the calls we get most often. We saw the identical failure recently on a twenty-year-old built-in Monogram — a completely different machine, in a different town, with exactly the same symptom. Different cabinets, same physics.
The fix
Replaced the evaporator fan motor assembly and closed the freezer back up.
Airflow can be confirmed before leaving, and it was: cold air moving through the duct into the fresh food compartment again. Temperature cannot — a refrigerator that has been warm for a day needs hours to pull back down. So we set the controls, told the customer what both sides should read once it settles, and left a number to call if it wasn't there by morning.
